SAF has adopted the 2-Step Aluminum coating process (Electrolytic Coloring), and discontinued the Integral Color (Duranodic) Anodizing process. The differences between the two Anodizing processes help to show why.

2-Step (Electrolytic Coloring)

  • Chief benefit of 2-step anodizing: does not craze during fabrication as badly as Integral Color.
  • Another plus for architectural applications: Anodized Color is independent of coating thickness.
  • Lower energy cost to produce
  • Better aluminum availability for both batch & coil processing
  • In general, more Anodizers prefer the 2-step process.

Integral Color (Duranodic) DISCONTINUED – no longer offered by SAF

  • Harder anodized coat (more dense) than 2-step, more subject to crazing during fabrication
  • Anodized Color varies depending on coating thickness.
  • Generally a thicker anodized coat, unless Class I 2-step is specified.
  • Single step process.
  • Hides welds a little better.
