SELECT FROM DOZENS OF STANDARD KYNAR 500 COLORS. OR, SAF CAN ALSO SPRAY COAT A CUSTOM COLOR FOR ARCHITECTURAL APPLICATIONS, SUCH AS A STOREFRONT OR CURTAIN WALL.
SAF can spray coat flat aluminum sheet with a PVDF coating. PVDF is sold under the trade names Kynar 500 and Hylar 5000. This is a popular choice when SAF customers need both aluminum sheet and a specified color because SAF can fill aluminum sheet orders from inventory and spray-coat to customer specifications, all under one roof.
Before we spray coat flat aluminum sheet, we make sure our customers know color will differ from coil coated sheet. Specifically, spray coated flat sheet will not be perfectly flat because of the warp imparted by the high temperatures required to cure PVDF. Spray coated sheets will have rack marks in each of the four corners and the surface texture will not perfectly match coil coated sheet.
Perhaps most importantly, even PVDF will craze, and may even crack or peel. To minimize crazing, sheets should be formed at temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray coated PVDF coatings on metal thickness greater than 0.050″ will almost certainly peel and delaminate when formed, and spray coatings on thin gage aluminum will craze more than coil coatings. Despite these caveats, customers continue to buy this product from SAF and put it to good use. So if you need a special custom match on aluminum flat sheet, we may be able to meet your needs. Lastly, it is important to understand that a paint has to be flexible to be formable. Popular paints such as Polycron, Acrodize, Sunstorm, Flurodize, Polyceram and most powder coatings are brittle and will crack and peel when formed. If one of these brittle coatings is specified, you must form the aluminum and then have it spray coated. Likewise, 3-coat systems should never be spray coated then formed. Even with 0.040″ thick aluminum, a 3-coat system is likely to craze, crack and peel.
